Former Trade Minister: Forward Trade Reform More Difficult

Indonesian Trade Minister for the period of 2004-2011 Mari Elka Pangestu said that Indonesia's trade reform in the future will be more difficult.

'Political policy is still reforming because the reforms in the future will be more difficult than previous reforms,' said Mari Elka in Nusa Dua, Bali, Friday (14/7/2017).

According to him, it is necessary policy or political will from the government to support the trade reform in the midst of dynamic world economic condition.

'Now the issue is more on domestic regulations, how about investments, etc. So it's harder, plus anti-globalization sentiment, so it needs political will in favor,' he said.

Political will, to be able to make people feel the impact of trade policy adopted by the government.

'So there needs to be political awareness, there is a perception of anti globalization because free trade is considered not to bring economic and development equalization for society,' said Mari Elka.

'The wrong is not the free trade, but the wrong is the absence of complementary policies to guarantee the benefit or growth of trade and globalization is more dispersed, so it should be combined with complementary policy,' he concluded
